a _45 minute_ briefing on how to ride in a stupid parade formation? OMFG, did they act it out with puppets or include some interpretive dance or something?
ive ridden with lots of different groups, from the "formal slow motion parade" types to the "hive of bees-everyone for himself" people to the common "double staggers columns till the twisties then single file" folks. having seen more than a few ride briefings i cant think of one that took more than 5 minutes, except for track school, which was, well more in depth than some harfwitted hog ride.
just sayin. 45 minutes! and required at that?
no thanks. i can why you wouldnt be into it.

Finally joined the local HOG Chapter and this Saturday with 10 other new chapter members rode in a required orientation ride. Road Captain briefing was great, he presented the “Chapters Rules of the Road” and following the 45 minute brief off we went.

That said, I enjoy our HOG chapter. We have a lot of rides and like riding with them or going the solo route. The point is, I have options to go either way. I've seen a lot of new turf with the HOG group I might not have seen otherwise. Riding in groups is no different than anything else--sometimes, you just have to experience it to get comfortable.

I mostly ride alone, and prefer it that way (solo or with the wife, either way is great). I have a couple friends that I will ride with, but just a few of us at any one time.
At least once or twice a summer I will do a poker run to help a local charity, but thats about it. I find I don't like being a part of the crowd. I don't know the other riders, what they will do, etc. I suppose if you do enough rides with a chapter, you will get to know folks... but oh well.
I did a couple rides with a local club... was being considered for membership... but I bailed on them after the two rides.... they had some folks in that club that didn't belong anywhere near a motorcycle (dangerous, and unable to control their machines... not acting like idiots type dangerous).
I like encountering other riders out on the rode at a pit stop.. saying hello, seeing where they are from. I find when a crowd stops, its all about the crowd and outsiders are not welcomed in (not saying they should be, just observations).

Road Captain briefing was great, he presented the “Chapters Rules of the Road” and following the 45 minute brief off we went. Being an old Infantry Platoon Sergeant, I understand you move as fast as your slowest person (but dang, is this riding). Also understand the need to established rules & course of action. During the orientation ride, I kept telling myself “riding is being FREE and enjoying the environment!” Riding as a member of a group, isn’t for me. I am independent, when I need to take a pee break, sightsee, divert from the established route, roll through a curve and just being FREE, a HOG Chapter ride isn’t my cup of tea. Anyone have a similar reaction about Chapter rides?
Knowing there are zillions of Chapter Members, this isn't a knock on you. Just my personal opinion.
