Default Help Needed! Strange Electrical Gremlin Problem

I think it's a sensor but don't know which one. Hopefully one of my HDF Brethren have some suggestions.

I've had an issue for the past few years whereas my neutral light and security light (red key) will come on while riding in higher altitude, like 5000 ft. or more.

Sometimes it's only the neutral light but most often both. It has never caused me any mechanical issues, only a distraction that goes away as soon as I come down from higher elevation.

Today however, while on one of my favorite mountain rides, at about 7,000 ft. elevation my speedometer quits working and although I still have power, I quickly decide to pull over to the shoulder and as I am coming to a stop my oil light goes on (the neutral and security light have already been on for several miles) and I soon realize the engine has stalled. I come to a complete stop, turn off the ignition switch, count to ten (no particular reason for counting to ten, it's just something I do whenever I reset an electronics component such as cable box, router, modem etc.) turn the ignition switch to on, hit the starter and she fires right up. I then run another seventy or so miles home with no further issues whatsoever. It may be noteworthy that after the re-start, the neutral and security light never came back on.

Also possibly noteworthy, a few weeks ago, while riding close to home, my speedo just suddenly quit, no other electrical issues. I approached a stoplight and the bike idled just fine. I decided to pull into a gas station, shut the engine off for the obligatory 10 seconds and fired up and continued home with no issues, speedo working just fine.

So have any of you brothers ever had anything like this happen? I am planning on replacing the neutral indicator sensor on the tranny since that has been suspect for a long time but I hardly think that would have been the cause of the incident today.

Looking for suggestions,

Thanks,
Dan

I am pretty sure the efi system has a sensor that reads barometric pressure. Just a WAG.

Thanks guys, I'll try tomorrow to remove and clean the speed sensor, probably have to remove the starter to get to it? Will see what the service manual says.

On the barometric pressure sensor, I think that is the MAP (manifold absolute pressure) Sensor. I will look into that too.

I had a grounding issue on my 03 Buell. It would give the same symptoms as you are having. Dummy lights come on (don't remember which) sometimes Speedo would drop. What year and model you working on? I'd verify grounding at the triple tree, battery, and frame connection. Positive side of battery to the starter too.

When the speedo and tack stop working on my 2006 FLHTCi my battery cables have come loose a little bit. Tighten them back up and no more problems. Happens about once a riding season....
