Default What causes the tight spots in the primary chain?

Just got done doing the typical inner primary bearing fix, also had to rebuild trans. due to shavings in oil. Found out that was from the main drive bearing eating it self. So I just did the rest and changed clutch hub bearing and primary chain. Finished off by installing a Baker manual primary chain adjuster. Baker said there would be tight spots in the primary chain. I was really surprised to see how much difference there was between the loose spot and the tight spot. Is that the crank that is making up the amount of difference? I could tell on the drive bearing race that there was one place that was getting hammered. Is that a normal thing for HD motor to do. Bike is a '09 Ultra Classic. with 20K on it. There was probably 1/2 in deflection difference. Thankx

I just did the same thing on my 2010 ultra the inner primary race was chewed up pretty good so I did all the bearings also I didn't do the chain but I did do the adjuster with the stock one I also did the se compensator upgrade and Kevlar clutch plates. I know I've had the stock chain in my hands a few times and never had noticed any tight spots in the chain its self. I set the adjuster so I have about 3/4" of play on the top row between the clutch and the compensator

As I adjusted mine I removed the spark plugs and kept spinning it over a few times between adjustments making sure everything was smooth

tight spots aren't in the chain itself, it's brand new. just rotating the motor over with a socket the chain gets real tight then with a half of rotation it goes loose. acts like the crank is out of round. don't have a mountable dial indicator to check for trueness. guess that might be in the future. no wonder the automatic chain adjuster had things so bound up. hoping the Baker adjuster will take care of that. i was just wondering if other HD motors were that way also? Thanks for your thoughts Big Mike

Your sprockets are less than round! Think oval.

It is a combination of run out in the crank and a non-concentric (not round) clutch basket.

Thankx for the answers guys, Sounds like I should get the dial indicator out. Do most HD clutch baskets have that same issue? i.e. being oval? hopefully it it will just be as easy as a new clutch basket. Guess Thanks are in order for QC at HD huh?
