I have a 2003 flhrci with a broken primary chain. the inner is broken under clutch basket. Looks like all else is okay. found an inner for 50 bones but still have 2 questions.
#1 best chain?
#2 best way to break the comensator nut with no chain....well i have it.
Curious as to what broke the chain in the first place? Only way to break the comp nut loose is with an impact gun IMO. (Your crank is still forged (tho' your motor doesn't have the dual Timken lefty bearing,) and the impact gun should still be just fine.)
I don't think anyone makes a bad primary chain, but if I was buying I'd get one made by Diamond.

The crank is a new S&S (stock build nothing special). I agree that an impact is going to work it offf but how to hold the damn thing. why did it break? dunno.
thanks I am seeing lots of info on the diamond chains. think Ill attatch the broken chain to the broken chain case. can't do any more damage right? and pull against it.

In your situation the impact gun is the best way to go. You don`t need any back up when you use the impact gun, either. Just make sure the impact gun is turning in the correct direction.

I did hit it with the impact locked against the case. easy peezy....
An impact gun concentrates all the turning force on to the nut or bolt you're trying to remove.
One quick little zap with the gun and the bolt will come loose without the surrounding components turning, this is one of the cool features of using an impact.
