Wait till the temperature gauge clouds with moisture that gets trapped behind the glass. It's not "if" it's only "when" this will happen. All of the Harley dial gauge oil temperature dipsticks do it sooner or later, and usually sooner than later. Then you'll not only be unable to read the oil level, you won't be able to read the temperature either. At that point you'll go back to the stock dipstick. So if you think you're po'd now . . . . just wait.

This is what pisses me off about Harley-Davidson. Riders dressed like pirates. There, I feel better now....
I have that dip stick, it is hard to read, but I have a softail so I just peek in there. If they flattened it out and put cross hatch on it it would be better.

I took some sandpaper and scuffed up the chrome on my dipstick. That way when I pull the dipstick out of the oil I can see where the shiney oil stops and the dull metal begins. Simple really. I thought everybody does that. Now if all the dipsticks on the 2019 models have a rough finish I swear I'm gonna sue them!!!

Not necessarily. My John Deere tractors have flat, yellow dipsticks with crosshatch markings on them and, with fresh oil, it is near impossible to read. Sometimes the paper towel method Charlie mentioned is difficult too. The best method I found is to put a very light dusting of (baby) powder on the dipstick. I can read it first time every time. For those concerned about putting powder in the oil, the amount is negligible and won't harm anything.Originally Posted by 03fattyaz

I had problems reading my tranny dipstick. A few minutes with a dremel tool and it had hatch marks. You have to adapt and overcome.

So I buy this oil temperature dipstick. It reads the oil temp. Not a digital gauge. So I change my oil. And I cannot read the damn oil level on the dip stick. So why am I pissed off? I bought it from Harley. If Harley was watching out for us they would not sell a dip stick that you cannot read the oil level when the oil is clean. This is the kind of thing that tells me that Harley really does not have the rider in mind. Its a small thing but is speaks volumns.

Maybe you should pay the dealer to check your oil level for you before every ride.
What kind of oil are using? Baby oil?
