There is more area for fluid flow in synthetic media than the Cellulose Media. As these media are loaded with contaminant, we see another advantage of the synthetic media increased flow area. Contaminant that plugs up 50% of the cellulose media surface area will only plug 10% of the synthetic media area. The result is much lower restriction in the synthetic media when compared to cellulose media for the same level of loading.
A molecule of oil is on the order of a thousand times smaller than one micron.
Cold oil molecules are actually slightly smaller than hot oil due to the Viscosity Index Improvers.
If the filter does produce an increase in resistance to oil flow, the oil pressure will increase but the oil pump will still move the same volume of oil every revolution.
The HD oil pumps are positive displacement oil pumps.
K&P Engineering hit it out of the park with this oil filter. I found out about them in 2010, I think it was, and hated to spend the money they wanted for one, but after figuring it up how much I'd spend the rest of my years on bikes, this was the *ONLY* smart way to go. It paid for itself while I owned my '09 (bought the filter in '10), and before selling the '09 I took it off that bike so that I'd have it for my current '98. Beats throwing away filters every 2500 miles (when I do my oil changes, religiously), doesn't dump all over the front motor mount but maybe a quarter of the amount of oil that a standard oil filter does when I change the oil, is easy to clean in the extreme. Just order two or three replacement o-rings for the seal and maybe even a second filter remover cap for it, just in case you move a lot (like me, unfortunately) and happen to lose one. I didn't need to change the first, original o-ring until two oil changes ago, by the way.
If you put a twinkie oil filter on an Evo, it restricts the flow because Evo filters are 10 micron and twinkies are 5 micron.
If you get an Evo filter from the dealer these days, you have to get a Sportster one (still 10 micron)..
You can put a Evo filter on a twinkie, but it won't filter as efficiently.
According to HD, these can be used in an EVO. It says the following in the Harley-Davidson Genuine Motor Parts & Accessories Catalog.
HD Part Number: 63798-99A
"can be used as an upgrade for any motorcycle that requires Oil Filter P/N 63796-77A, 63805-80A, 63812-90 or 63813-90."
I used HD cause when I used an after market with the oil cooler, it was just a tiny it to long. Would not spin on. I tried spinning it on, over and over gain, got the old one ad went out. It was hitting CPK by a hair.
Though somedaymaybe will try again. Not cause money, but because fleet farm is open later than dealer.
