Many informed individuals on forum.

The addition of year and model might help others to identify the bike as someone might have the same bike.

Identification of the part would also help clarify.
Using something like the parts link below might help you to get name of part you are trying to identify and part number.
Makes it easier to describe to others.

I had an issue with it on my 08 FLHTCU. First time I put the O-ring back in place (I was in a parking lot and bike wouldn't start). It got me going but happened again about a week later. Took to the dealer (bike was under warranty). I think they replaced the hose that connects to the tank (may have been a recall or service letter). Wasn't long after it leaked again and I replaced the O-ring.
A year or two later it happened again. I replaced both hoses (from the tank and inside the tank). If I recall both had a revision level or new part number.
The connection was a lot tighter and more solid that it was originally. I haven't had an issue since.

I have done it. It's really, really difficult on the bike. My best success was to take the tank off, turn it upside down and go at it with a small, stiff wire bent 90° on the tip. Mine came out in brittle, broken pieces, so I had to spend several minutes with the pic and the blow gun to make sure I got it all out. Once I got it out, the new one popped right in and it's been "gas-tight' ever since.

G'luck!
