Default Flex tube exhaust dilemma

I'm talking abiout the flex, corrugated exhaust covers to run up your pipes for that vintage look...
Only problem: standard exhaust has the compensator pipe welded in connecting the two exhaust about halfway down from the heads to the mufflers. So... How in the world are you supposed to slip the damn flex pipe on?
You can't cut it on the back to make way for the compensator pipe, as flex pipe is actually a spiral sheet of metal wound up on itself, so if you cut it one side, basically you get so many rings of metal.
Is it possible to take down the exhaust, and slip half a tube from above, with a slot cut to accomodate the compensator, and half from the muffler end, removing the mufflers?
Or do I have to cut the comp away, and then reweld it on? (messy!).
Actually, I did see flex used only in 2 in 1 exhausts, but I'd like to keep my two separate tubes...
What do you think?

Disconnect it from the head and slide the covers down over the pipe and then reinstall the exhaust on the motor.

Head-side or muffler-side, the problem is that the tube joining the two exhausts is still there, about halfway down and the flex pipe can't pass...

You may have to disconnect all the joints and slide the covering over each piece and notch it to cover up the joints. Or go to true duels and lose the cross over pipe. Good luck and post up pics when your done.
