77 ironhead electrical problem
I am new to this forum. or any forum for that matter so I have to get used to how everything works. the wirfor the coil to the points grounds when it is put in place on the points. If I touch the wire to the case it sparks. I can't figure out how the engine is shoting he points.
Ok, I am taking a guess here, you have the wire disconnected from the points, and have the key on. If so, then the answer is yes..thats what the points do, allow current to flow through the primary windings in the coil, building a magnetic field. When the points open, the current is interupted, the field collapses over the secondary windings in the coil, and it fires. Same way every ignition sytem works (well, sometimes with transistors, but still the same)..its how you get thousands of volts from a 12v system.
I'm guessing you have no spark?
