Default Pike's Peak

I'm sure many of you all have been to Pike's Peak in Colorado. I would love to get there myself. A few of us may try to go this summer. My question- Is a bike friendly run, and what is the best time of year to go?

It is a 21 % grade.....Definitely not bike friendly, especially at the halfway point when it turns to gravel the rest of the way. On the way down, there is mandatory stop point where workers check every vehicle for overheated brakes.

Snow is still there in August as well.....

I wouldn't even drive my own car up that hill...We rented one instead, and let that one get abused (it overheated).

Definitely a summer time trip. Too early or late in the year will be very cold on top. Always a chance of getting caught in the rain, sleet or snow whenever you go. Road is mostly paved but about6 to8 miles is gravel, maybe more. Took these pics at the end of Sept. 07. Didn't make it to the top the first time we tried it, started sleeting on us, but managed it the next day. Definitely worth the effort.

Here is a link for you. Note that the Pike's Peak highway is less than 20 miles long, yet they recommend two hours for a round trip. There is also a really neat cog railway you can take.

Coming down from Pike's Peak, we saw a thunderstorm go by underneath us in a valley. That was pretty incredible.

it's bike friendly if you're a good rider. Good luck though, it's NOT easy. I ride everywhere, but take my advice - ride the cog railway instead.

BAH! It isn't a difficult ride at all if you are a competent rider. What isn't paved is wide and kept in very good condition. A little washboard effect in places but nothing that challenging. Be sure to grab some of the donuts at the top. They're so good I have walked up the mountain a few times just to have a few.

Its a blast but not a fast blast at the top unless you are really into it. Snow anytime of year, this pic is in August.

They race cars-bikes-trucks-semi trucks up it every year, they have been racing cars etc up Pikes Peak since 1916 or thereabouts.
If they can race bigs trucks up it you can ride it. just watch the weather.

I would love to see the view from the top, especially after riding my bike up there. I'll have to think about it a bit more, maybe check out the website.

I rode up it in 1972 in August. I was on my new Sportster and my buddy was on a 650 BSA. It was an easy ride and well worth the effort. Both of did have to stop midway down to let the brakes cool down, but other than that, the bikes had no trouble with the ride.
