I've been up and down it several times and never had a problem. In 1983 a friend of mine rode it with a hardtail sportster with long front end and no front brake. It does get cold at the top, make sure you're prepared for that. Stay in a low gear going down and save your brakes. It's a beautiful ride, one you'llnever forget. Another great mountain ride in CO is Mt. Evans, near Idaho Springs. It's not as steep as Pike's Peak but is quite a bit longer. It's all paved, but the pavement is in bad shape towards the top. It's actually a little higher than Pike's Peak. Bring cold weather gear here, too.

If you REALLY want a nice mountain road go to the Rocky Mountain National Park just north of Denver it is the highest paved road in the world. as far as going up PP I drive up once in a car and felt better walking up it. too many idiots trying to drive.

Can be difficult do to the weather, but is a okay ride for anybody that has any experience. Raced up it on a bike in 76,77,78 Pikes Peak Hill Climb. Altitude change will have some effect on performance, not so much if your injected vs carb.

Took the wife up on her first year on a Dyna and she did just fine. If Ya have the chance do it!
