Kenny Roberts 1975 Indy Mile. He din't say he would never ride it again. he said "they don't pay me enough to ride that thing." He rode it two more times that season before it was banned.

Reread my comments. I said #1 in "large motorcycle" sales. The biggest thing Honda, or any of the others had at the time, were less than 1,000cc's.

Man this thread is bringing back some cool memories.... but as for the OPs question:

I believe the first red, white, and blue #1 was put on the nose of the streamliner when being repainted after Calvin Ray "the Palpitating Pussycat" Rayborn slid onto his side a couple of times before setting a new World Land Speed Record at Bonneville in 1970.

EDIT TO ADD: Not sure if he visits this forum, but obviously Denis Manning would know for sure.

Ya'll correct me if I am wrong but I believe Evil jumped the fountains at Caessar's on a Triumph. There was no number 1 on his leathers at that time. Should have been on a Harley, he might have made it.

This thread has brought back some great memories. Thanks.

I just saw a clip o that a couple of days ago. I could've sworn it was a 900 Sporty...or 750 KLH

Indeed Junebug made a good post on a great era. I happened to live in San Diego then and was locally successful drag racing and doing a couple of stints at Bonneville. My memories are from Don Vesco giving me an informal hand with a Yammerhammer at Bonneville but the REAL DEAL guys (Kel Carruthers and Kenny Roberts) were true "employees" working with him in El Cajon back in those days. BTW - I also got to ride a HD fuel bike for a local indy in Spring Valley - anyone remember Ron Cambell or Clay Hoag?

You mean this one? I took these pics at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway museum.

That's it alright. It got scratched up when Cal slid over (lots harder to go slow than it is to go fast in one of those things) and I think the #1 got put on when it was repainted. I don't know for sure though - sorry.

Thanks for the post Junebug, that is a really good read.
Evel's jump at Caesar's was on a Triumph, not a H-D.
