That's always a funny story.
I read the same thing a couple years ago, only it took place in England, the police were Bobbies, and the aircraft was a Tornado being flown by the Royal Airforce.
Surprized the cops did not get the tail number. Probably one of those urban legend things.
Military jets don't have tail numbers as would be the case with civil aircraft. They generally have a tail designation that could be as simple as a couple of large letters or even a painted squadron designation. The last squadron I was with had a coiled rattle snake in yellow and brown with the words "Death Rattlers" under the snake. This was painted on the tail fin.
funny story. the details make it an obvious "urban legend" but still funny.
A similar but less impressive thing happened to me in the Army. Shortly after Desert Storm (the country still had yellow ribbons around everything), my unit was on a field problem in the back woods of Lewis. A squad in my platoon was sick of MREs so they hit up the Burger King in Spanaway." (If you've been stationed at Lewis, you know you can just drive on and off post easily back there.) The drive-thru guy freaked out when their HUMV with a 60 mounted on top came through. It had a big orange blank adapter and wasn't loaded, of course, but still......The manager complained to some office on post. Our BN commander replied with a letter, which he read on the next payday activities. "Dear Sir, The soldiers in question acted on their own initiative, as they are trained to do. I regret and apologize if it caused any undue surprise. But please take comfort in knowing that the community of Spanaway, WA is well protected. Thank you for serving them and supporting your Army." (not a verbatim recollection, but it was along those lines....) the whole battalion just busted up laughing.
That was TOO funny. I lived at New River Air Station, by Camp Lejeune, NC for 3 years and saw my share of jets and helicopters. I'm proud to say that my son is a Sergeant (soon to be a Staff Sergeant) of the USMC (3 tours of duty overseas) and recently has been approved for officer's school.
My car has a sticker saying 'Proud parent of a US Marine'.
(course, I'm proud of any man or woman in the United States Armed Forces!!!!!)
Thanks for the smile
