Default Basic Service

Okay, after reading all the threads about what a dealership charges for basic service, and how you can do it much cheaper yourself, I've been wondering what tools would be necessary for this. I've got basic hand tools. I'm pretty sure I'd need some sort of lift, and a torque wrench in order to perform said services. What other tools do you have in your garage to perform service. Are necessary tools listed in the service manual?

All the tools are listed - you don't need a lift for basic services - it's nice to have one, but not necessary. Get 2 torque wrenches - one in in-lbs and the other in ft-lbs. You'll need a set of Torx bits, some good ratchets and sockets (both SAE and Metric). Also need an oil filter wrench, and that's pretty much it. Nothing fancy at all.

You need the special wrench to torque the axle nut on the rear wheel. I don't have it, so I just marked where the nut was before taking it off to replace the tire, and retightened to that point. I had my dealer tech check it the next time I was in, and it was spot on.

Manuals at Zanottis or Chicago HD. Both are 20% off.

The most needed tool is the Service Manual. Spend the extra money and buy the Harley Specific manual from Harley. It's got everything you need to know about your bike in there.

Word on the oil filter wrench...those Craftsman " fits all" don't git 'er done...I got one from Advance(took my new filter in and matched it) that goes on a 3/8 drive extension. Much happier oil changes with that style...about $6...

There is only one service manual, the Harley factory one. The others don't even come close. Buy quality tools, they will last a lifetime. Before you buy any tools, take a quick dry run thru the procedures in the service manual and see what you need.

A lift is a handy thing to have also. They are great for cleaning wheels and white walls too.
