Any ideas on the following problems? I have a 1997 Dyna done around 23,000 miles with a Mikuni carb, after market pipes and Crane Cam fitted.
Recently it started to run rough when cold. It starts OK on full choke and idles a little unevenly but not too bad, I always put it down to the lumpy cam shalft. But when you try to give her some gas she protests by missing, back-firing, popping and farting and loosing all power. Sometimes she refuses to idle on anything but full choke until she's fully warmed up and stops altogether if you let her. Once warmed up, (after about 10 minutes in city traffic) she smooths out completely and runs fine pulling well and idleing around 900 - 1,000 revs.
I've checked the plugs and she is blackening the rear plug. The front one looks good, yellowish brown and clean. She also seems to be using way to much fuel.
One other thing is that when I start her sometimes the started sounds like it's spinning free and it takes one or two goes to engage it and start the bike.
Any ideas on the above would as ever be gold dust.
Put some fresh plugs in and see what happens. Usually when the motor is popping and hesitating, its an indication that its running too lean, especially if you have to keep the choke on. You may be fouling the plugs by choking it which would also cause you some problems, but that would be a secondary problem that is likely caused by choking the engine to correct the initial problem. Hope this helps.
There alot things it could be if the has not been used much. It could be a little water in the carb bowl. How old is the gas. The air cleaner can be dirty. Check your plug wires. Couple new plugs can be a good start.
