Poker run do's & don'ts
#12
Quit going on them some years back as most(then) tended to have all the stops at bars. Nothing against someoen having a cold one but not while riding/driving.
Last one we went on, we started solo, caught about 6 others at a stop & rode rest of way with them.
Nowadays, most have a last bike out/last bike in time. But I have seen the last couple say they would be going out in small groups for safety sake - i.e. traffic.

All of the poker/dice runs I have been on around here are "go at your own pace," but more times than not the entire group sticks together and rides from stop to stop. Some are better organized than others depending on which group or club is putting them on. I was on one that ended up being what seemed like a drag race from stop to stop at the end, and a drag race at each stop to see who could drink the most beer. Now I only go to runs now that benefit someone I know personally or a friend of a friend maybe. My wife rides and I've witnessed way too many idgits running up on her tail light, cutting her off, or passing her in her lane. I can't handle that ****.

Organizer or rider
If you are the organizer of the poker run, make sure each stop has access to a bathroom, and if it is hot, sell water at each stop. Pay attention to how you get into or out of the selected site, and make it a right turn if possible into and then out of the stop. Most poker runs get riders from other clubs that are unfamiliar with the local roads/stops, so they want to ride with the locals. We have learned to limit the size of the groups to about 10 riders, otherwise it gets too dangerous. Our club has the road captains lead the rides so if you are new to an area, you can go with them. Depending on how many people are signed up, our road captains may leave every 10 minutes to 30 minutes. You are also welcome to go solo or with your group of friends, have at it, but our club tries to accomodate any and all riders with saftey in mind. Not every stop has to be at a baar as others have said.
Now if you are just a rider in the poker run, royal flush is the way to go as previously stated. Our club lets you buy extra cards at the last stop, kind of like in real poker where you can discard some cards and get new ones.

Most of the poker runs/charity rides around here (NE Tennessee) are done as a group. It is a lead ride and everyone stays together. Can be good and can be BAD!!!!!!!! A lot of no ridin momma chickens around here. My company is sponsoring a poker run a week from tomorrow and we are setting the stop order and have a map of a suggested route but we don't care how they get there as long as they go in the proper order. This way once the last person hits the first stop and leaves, those working that stop can pickup and move to the last stop to work it. We don't want to have to have enough people to work every intersection. Just let everyone ride at their own pace.

Poker Runs can be fun with the right group .. Save the partying for after the ride.. I prefer riding with a small group of 5-6 Riders .. Stay safe and alert and can be a rewarding time raising money for a good cause..

I've never been on a poker run where the entire group sticks together after the first stop, and I've been on a LOT of poker runs. Usually, everyone leaves from the start point as a group (there is usually some sort of police escort at first) and gets to the first stop together. From there, people leave on their own, or in small groups and hit the rest of the stops.
If you want to avoid the drunks, stay ahead of the run. Go into the first stop, get your card, and leave immediately for the next stop. Leave any stop when more than a few other riders from the run show up.
As for the cards - to try to eliminate cheating, they will have some type of scoring system set up which does NOT involve having the best poker hand (or any poker hand at all) - so it doesn't matter what cards you have.
Have fun!

Thanks again for all the tips. This run will be from Colorado Springs to Breckenridge, should have good weather too. They are having rooms reserved at one of the hotels in Breck, but I plan to return to Springs same day.
