I agree, and did, matter of fact. The third brake light was not working (a few broken LEDs), and had to replace it. I smoked the new light when it arrived as well, but unfortunately the pic was taken after the smoking but before I got the new light.

Thanks for all the replies guys, I should have posted the NH law, thanks for posting that.
Doing a google search, people keep saying they are illegal in all states, but at least in NH there is no specific wording in the statute about it. Not sure about other states.

I like the idea of printing out the statute, and keeping it on the bike. Thx

How about getting an inspection sticker, has anyone out there failed an inspection over smoked lenses??

I'm not really worried about the reflectors, since mine were on the license plate surround, and I already took them off. If I'm not worried about that, then I guess the smoked lens shouldn't bother me. I just don't want to give the cops any reason to pull me over.

I would think that the cops would appreciate that I am trying to be more visible, and any cop that would ticket for such an offense is being a real *****!

Thanks for the help , I do appreciate it!
Peace

The problem as I see it, is that on some cars I've seen, the lens is so dark you can't hardly see the red light. All of the smoked bike lenses I've seen are not that dark.

I had the tri-bar LED brake light on my Fat Bob with no problems. Considering that Harley sells their own LED smoked brake lights I kind of doubt that it's illegal. Not saying there isn't a chance but as long as the manufacturer states that they are DOT approved then I doubt there's a problem.

I didn't read all of the answers, but here is what I think (for what it matters)...

I think it is stupid to make your tail/brake light darker bu putting smoked/tinted lenses over it.

Sure, it might look better, but....
As if that person behind you can see you anyway.....

I've got the BAL-1 and it's a great light.

The thing is, if something every happens and you are rear-ended, you don't want to give the opposing attorney any ammunition to use against you.

Just sayin

I've been rear-ended at stop lights in almost every car I've owned, so for me, I'll stick with red tail-light and amber turn signals. It's dangerous enough out there.
