Im thinking about buying an mp3 player to listen to some music on the long road trip to Daytona. One thought that comes to mind is not being able to hear traffic around me.
Anybody use one and what has your experiences been?
Also...any tips on a good one...budget is about $150.00

I just got this one for my son at christmas seems to work great 2 gig and runs on AAA batteries. I have started wanting one now also.

the new ipod shuffle goes for $79 it is 1gig holds 240 songs. It is very small!http://www.apple.com/ipodshuffle/

 

You will be able to hear fine as long as you don't crank it too loud . I have an old mp3 now but will get the shuffle here real soon . Nice to have on a long ride

 

Santa brought me a new 30GB Creative Zen Vision M mp3 player,and I really love it since it also has a FM radio as well. The stock earphones with it and most every other brand of mp3 player are pretty cheap. I have my mp3 player with me everytime I go anywhere on my bike other than just a lil quick zip around town. I would suggest buying a good pair of noise canceling inner ear buds. They will block out the wind noise and will sound great. The Sure E2 earbuds are good as well as the ones made by Bose. They are kinda pricey appx $75-$100 just for the earphones but a set of good noise canceling earphones will make a much less expensive mp3 player a great setup. So,... My suggestion is find the least expensive mp3 player that has the features that your looking for and then use the saving to buy you a good set of noise canceling earphones.

Your biggest hindrance, will be actually being able to hear the music at highway speed. My kid has an mp3 similiar to the one in the top pic (Creative labs). It worked just fine, but couuldnt hear it well til I bought a good set of earbuds, for about 50 bux.

 

Does it have to be plugged into a computer to charge?

 

If your looking to spend $150 get the Ipod Nano. I just got onefor xmas, and it rocks. It does need to charge on the computer, but 1 charge is about 24 hrs. of listening. You can also buy a charger that will plug into any out let. Last year I bought two of the creative lab Nuvo pictured above and they both stoped working after a few months. Do some product reveiws on the Nuvo and you'll see more then half of them made just die for no reason. If I didn't have the Ipod my next choice would be Sandisk.

 

My two cents goes to the Sandisk Sansa M250, (Or any other in that family) for around $130.
As a computer tech I've looked at many of these. The iPods are very popular but I don’t like the fact that you can’t plug in the unit to your computer and “drag and drop” your mp3’s into it. You have to use the iTunes software and it wants to convert the files to the Apple MP4 format. The Sandisk will use the Windows Media Player to load music and it will want to convert files to the WMA format but you don’t have to like the iPod. It will appear in My Computer as a removable drive and then you just “drag and drop”, “copy and paste”, etc. Also, it runs on AAA batteries. One rechargeable battery will last all day, and can be replaced on the fly. You can get a charger and four batteries at Best Buy cheap.

I’m still trying to find a pair of “buds” I like.

I would have to agree that the Sandisk products are really good. I have an older one and its great still,.... but just find you a good set of earbuds and you'll enjoy your tunes.
