I just purchased V&H true dual headers for my SGS and they are telling me at the dealer I need a tuner and for bike to be dyno tuned, nothing else has been changed I've check on this forum and some say don't worry about it others say to get a tuner. I just need to know if I can safely ride the bike ie not to lean. I will most likely change the A/C and slip-ons at some point but not just yet. I emailed V&H asking there opinion but haven't heard back from them. Thanks
LOTS of opinions. I changed exhaust, lost the cat, aftermarket mufflers, stage 1 intake on my Dyna. Put Xieds on it and by the plug readings I was never lean. No pop, no detonation, etc, ran 87 octane gas in it, etc. hauled ***, too.
Delphi is very adaptable. Could I have gained some HP & torque by spending the $$ for a tuner and dyno runs? Most likely yes, but at a point of diminishing returns. Depends what you are looking for....
What year is the SG? Your engine is an air pump. The only way to change the Air Fuel Ratio (AFR) is to pass air thru at a faster rate. If you do not change your intake or filter and you do not change your exhaust the air flow rate will most likely not change enough to make a difference. If you have a newer SG with a catalytic converter you have narrow band O2 sensors and the engine management system will try to maintain the factory settings.
The bike is 2014 and not looking for any performance gains just wanted that cat out, just want to make sure ghat I DONT need the tuner or dyno as the dealer said I do.
You won't need tuning until you change the air intake. You might, I say might, notice a slight stumble on low end. But that's due to eliminating the x-over.
If you don't get it tuned and there is trouble because of the headers......will the dealer say its not covered under warranty? That would be my concern.
Put 'em on and ride it. You'll know pretty quick if you need anything additional. Since you're still running the stock A/C, and the stock mufflers, I'm betting you won't. But, if you get a lot of decel pop, or even a backfire now and then, you might consider either the Xieds or the dealer's download, which is a lot cheaper than a tuner and dyno run. Especially since all you're wanting to do is get rid of some heat caused by the CAT.
Thanks for the advice all I want is to get rid of that heat from the cat nothing more , any reason why the dealer is telling me I need a tuner and dyno if all I'm doing is changing the header pipe why are they insisting on the dyno.
