Default Permanent connection to trickle charge battery

Hi,I've just recently imported a 97 softail custom into the UK from California. Because of our glorious winters here, I was wondering if I can fit a permanent connection on the the battery to make it easier to keep charged. Not sure if battery should be disconnected to charge it , thanks

Why not consider putting a 'pig tail' connector to your battery and then plug in battery tender as needed.

Welcome to the forum.

A regular trickle charger will over charge and damage the battery, as will allowing it to run flat. These batteries will never fully recover from a deep discharge.

What you need is an electronically controlled battery tender.

They come with a set of quick connects.

Attach
this this
to the battery of your bike with the two-pin connection poking out somewhere accessible -ziptied to the swingarm should be a good spot- and keep the bike plugged into
this this
when not in use.
Note that the second product (the Battery Tender Junior) ships with the first product (the harness) included already.

FYI, you don't need to bring the battery indoors during winter. Just keep plugged in during storage. It works here in Minnesota so it will work in the UK.

Yeah, what they said. My pigtail is installed so it comes out just behind the seat on the RH side, and the little retainer on the weather cap loops around the upper swing arm to keep it out of the rear wheel. Hardly noticeable...
