Default Changing Handlebars

So I got a set of handlebars cheap from somebody on craigslist. The bars are great, and look great on the bike, only problem is that the wires and cable don't quite reach to the 16" bars. The handle bars on it now are not the stock ones, but are only 12". Is there a cheaper alternative to the $180 cable/wire kits from companies like Burly? I'm willing to do more work to save some money, just need a starting point. Any help is appreciated.

You can buy the cables individually, and splice the wires by hand. That's what I did. Cut wires in the middle and splice the length you need. Color doesn't matter this way because you still have the right color on each end. Make sure to use heat shrink and solder the connections.

If you go this route then remember to stagger the splices to keep the bulk down.

How much does this cost in comparison? Where should I get the cables/wires? Do you know of any good videos or instructions I could go off of?
