Question Measuring for apes

Looking to install some apes on my sportster, so I went ahead and sat on my bike and positioned my hands where it seemed it would be comfortable for me and had someone measure from the top of the trees to my hands to determine the total height that I would need in a combination of riser and bar height....the measurement was 19 inches!!!! Seemed a little high considering I was thinking a 12-14" set of apes with 1.5-2 risers would be a good fit.

I am wondering if I am measuring this correctly or if there is another way to determine what height I need for my bars and risers to be positioned in a comfortable spot
