I think Revzilla is the best place to buy a helmet. Good prices and you can return the helmet if it doesn't fit as long as you don't ride with it on. Things to consider:

helmet shape

weight and ventilation of helmet

size of eye port

noise level

DOT or Snell rating

I have found Arai, Shoei, and AGV to be the best brands for me

Find a Cycle Gear if you can and try them on. I bought a modular last year for bad weather.

I normally wear a half helmet, and have ordered 3/4 helmets in the same brand and same size, and they didn’t fit.

You need to try them on.

I’ve bought six helmets in three years. Half of them fit, the other half didn’t. And in my size.

Yeah you can get used to it; however, you need one that fits correctly. EDIT: I see others were quicker on the draw.............lol

Find you a Cycle Gear Shop if you have one near you and have them fit you and show you the different brands/models. Head shape has a lot to do with comfort (round, egg shape etc.)

Nothing worse than a helmet that does not fit. Make sure you wear the one you are thinking of for 20 minutes or so in the store to check for hot spots (pressure points) etc.

May also want to consider a full face that the front lifts up (modular).

I needed a new helmet after my crash (hit & run) in June.
Wanted another modular because the previous one saved my good looks.
Decided to get a 'better model' and settled on a CF AVG through CycleGear.com

It arrived today and it is too damned small.
Took it to my local store to return it and see what options they had in stock; I was unimpressed.

I was feeling lucky so I went to my local HD dealership and found their selection to be even worse.

Decided to try Revzilla.com and was lucky enough to find the same AGV model in the next size up.
Needless to say, it has been ordered and I'll try again.

I stopped by a Cycle Gear to check out their grand opening specials. I tried on a Bilt FF helmet, it seemed to fit well and was not
too heavy, so I bought it. After getting home, I had been in my truck, I went for a ride on my scooter.

I was so impressed I returned to Cycle Gear and bought another FF helmet. That way I wouldn't have to bother changing shields
between day and night riding. Later when it got hot, I discovered the vents worked pretty good too. I discovered this after
sitting at some lonnng lights, we have some bad ones, here.

Helmets like shoes need to tried on before purchase. New should be a little tight, some time on they will conform nicely.

My previous (2) helmets were BILT Techno 2.0 w/ BT interface.
They are fine helmets for the $$, but I wanted a nicer helmet this time.
The AGV carbon fiber modular that I chose this time is a lot lighter than the BILT helmets, and the straps/padding/liner are all made of better materials as well.

The best part about buying a helmet from an online source is that you are not limited to the few models and sizes (and colors too) that the shop happens to still have on hand.

I like the 2-day shipping and the ability to return it to a local store if it isn't right for me.

Fit is definitely important.
Be sure to wear your glasses (if applicable) when trying one on.
