it is a possible thing, i have had the same over the years. that ferrule is mechanically fixed and over time, flexing can make it separate. the old cables had a coiled metal core and this was not an issue, usually the jacket decomposed first but with today's composite materials in the core makes it more likely. the newer cables will have less friction and not need lubrication, so, win/lose???
