Unknown Noise???
Hey Guys(and Gals (God Bless YA!
), I have a noise that hits about 2500 - 3000 rpm. It sounds like it's coming from the top end of the front cylinder. The bike has 53k on it, the oil pressure is good. I know the shifting shaft coming out of the tranny is loose but I don't think that's the problem. It sounds like valves pinging like I'm using to low an octane gas but I've switched to "Plus" 2 tanks ago. Any places I need to look? I did notice my air deflectors on my forks will wobble a bit against the forks but the bolts are tight.
Thanks for the help..

Not yet but I noticed with my 3rd tank of 89 octane gas it is better but still there. Perhaps I have more than one thing going on. Maybe now after the Holiay we'll get some HD wisdom from some of these fine folks.
Without actually listening to it, it could be a number of things but the first thing that came to my mind was the pinging that you mentioned especially on low revs and higher gears. Next time you hear it drop down a gear and see if it's still there. If it's gone it is most likely pinging.
Might not be your problem but I'll pass on an experience I had several years ago.
I had a 2001 Heritage Classic and on a trip down from Williams I started hearing this strange vibration sound. Hard to explain. I would stop check everything over and just coudn't figure it out. Only at some speeds and rpms and not all the time. Crazy.
A few days later I'm washing the bike and I noticed the exhaust heat shield by my right foot had been bent in close enough to the exhaust pipe that the two would vibrate against each other at certain rpms and speeds.

What mods have been done? What's you compression ratio? What kind of engine is it? Year? More info would help.
My Dyna does the same thing sometimes after it warms up. It's a ticking sound from the valvetrain. Perfectly normal, actually, as long as it's running well.
Have your tried 93 octane? I use that in all my bikes. I still get some slight pinging on my Dyna (10:1 compression) when it's hot out, but it's minor. If using 93 octane doesn't help, check your timing... you may have to retard it slightly. Also, make sure you aren't lugging the engine. Downshift if necessary.
Check your pushrod adjustment. Check the screen, too. (refer to your factory service manual for instructions). It's also possible that your lifters or going south. If it's an EVO, and the lifters are original, then it's time to change them. They are usually only good for about 40-50k miles. They are cheap and easy to change.
