I've got a 1978 FXE. When I push the electric starter switch, it clicks and sometimes it cranks on the first push, sometimes on the 30th and sometimes not at all. It has a new battery, solenoid and relay. Any suggestions?

Make sure BOTH battery cables are clean and tight at EACH end tight , make sure the battery posts are clean and the battery is charged all the way up , check your switch housing for corrosion, put some dielctric grease on all of the ends. Check all concerned electrical connections with a meter for correct ohms, amps and volts. If all this doesn't help , pull the starter and have it checked out!! Good luck in finding the problem!!!
Let me add this: I am wondering if the new Ultima High Performance starter (1.4kw) can cause a problem where some sort of heavy duty starter relay is necessary. It seems as though if the new battery is charged ALL night, it responds well. As the next day or two goes by, it diminishes, even though that level of power used to activate a stock starter adequately (stock starter was inadequate with the 93ci). These heavy duty starters are common with large ci EVO style and twin cam style motors, but I'm unfamiliar with the type of relay used with these later model things. Are people using a heavy duty starter relay on these late model things??

JMO here ----- 2 things --- 1st. if you have a FULLY charged battery and it's diminishes in a day or two -- you either have a dead short somewhere or 2nd - you need to start thinking about a new battery. A low battery will have an affect on your starter not matter what kind it is. When you go looking for a new battery and with the 10 to 1 comp, make sure you get the highest CCA for your scoot.
