I have the opportunity to purchase an FLHTC Ultra Classic Electra Glide (cheap). I'm not really interested in retaining the front fairing and rear bag though. How difficult or expensive is it to remove the fairing and put the guages on the tank console?
man that sounds like a cluster waiting to happen, there are major wire looms inside that fairing. what would you replace the fairing with to house the lights & wires?
There is more to that fairing than meets the eye! The dash, which you look at while sitting on the bike, is actually the structure that supports everything else. The pretty bit is fastened to it. There are a lot of electrics inside, filling up much of the space in there, in addition the gauges need quite a lot of space. Removing the batwing would be a serious challenge and not for the feint hearted, or a novice!
If you buy the bike, get yourself a factory service manual, so you can read up before you take any spanners to it.
