Default Backing Up

I've never seen it mentioned in a forum or in the MSF, but I've always thought it was a good idea to put your bike in neutral before backing up. Thattaway, if you loose your balance or your hand slips off the clutch, the bike won't lunge. Just a thought.

[sm=goodidea.gif] Good point, same as making sure it's in neutral before hitting the starter button.

Another classic goof that sucks to do in front of an audience.

Best one I've seen in awhile is in gear, fork lock still in place, and a wheel lock, too. Guy gets on, hits starter button, lurches, and falls over. Gets up, rights bike, unlocks fork, gets bike in neutral, starts bike, drives about 2 feet, locks up rear wheel on wheel lock, falls over. By this time everyone was laughing so hard no one could even think of offering any help.

Guy doesn't ride any longer.

Might want to consider pulling his breeding card too. Strengthen the gene pool while we're at it...

Some gene pools just need extra chlorine.

A freind of mine did the same thing with a brake lock on his front caliper, funny thing that the night before some of his buddy'd made the comment that they would forget it was on and he laughed and said I never forget it. Well the next morning they were loading up in Pa. and guess what,BAM goes the bike in front of his buddie's,they thought the trans. had locked up until his brother seen the lock.[sm=smiley26.gif]

Ive found it easier to just pick up my motorcycle and turn it around. Make sure your passenger is ready first though, you wouldnt want them to be caught off guard.

oldgeezer,

Good advise. I have heard most bikes are dropped backing up, turning around etc.

Ironhead, dont just make sure it is in neutral, pull the clutch in. I have heard of the green neutral button being lit and it still be in gear. My brother in law has a bad habit of starting his in first gear. He just doesnt check before he hits the starter. Luckly he has always cought his bike before it went down. He has done it twice.
