What rear crash bars are those? I wonder if they could swap sides and be bent at the bottom to reach the saddlebag mounts. You might be surprised at how far you can bend chromed parts before it cracks.

The '83 looks awesome! I'm sure you're chomping at the bit to get it in your possession. It'll make a great stablemate for your "59". Thanks for the advice; I'll happily take all I can get.Nothing was really leveled in that pic, just hanging by some bungees. I definitely want to get the bags as far forward as the bag rails will allow, because I want to run the FLH turn signal bar under the tail light. It had lowering blocks on it, which I removed to make a little more room for the bags.It also has 12 inch shocks, so it's still low enough for me.

I do love the rails! Unfortunately, the chrome is rusty and peeling. But, I knew this when I bought them. They were accurately represented .Mainly, I didn't want to spend more for better ones, if I wasn't sure I could make them work. I believe I can. I know I could have them rechromed, but that is probably not in the cards for stage one of this project. Plans are to sand them as smooth as possible, utilize a little body filler where necessary and finish them off in black POR 15. It's tough, and will leave a smooth, glossy surface. Oh, the set also did come with a brace at the rear to tie the two sides together.

Concerning the crash guards, I am certainly no expert, but very casual research suggests these are 1965 and 1966 items only.'67's and later, had a plate, with a hole, welded to the upper end, that went on the shock stud, behind the shock, '64's had a similar arrangement. These are threaded on the upper end, 1/2" X 20, same as the Dyna. More of that very casual research, reveals that early '65's were threaded 3/8" X 24, and sometime in the model year, a change was made to the larger thread. I'd love to use them, but for now, I'm going to set them aside, and maybe revisit them later. If not, I'll try rehoming them at some later date.

The '83 Shovelhead will be stabled with my Ultra Limited. The "Panhead" will be sent down the road to make room in my garage and my bank account. I will probably have to bring it to my son's place in Minneapolis to get a broader market. I hope there is interest in it. That Shovelhead only has 15K original miles on it, can't pass it up.

AFMM3, you said you reversed the direction of the axle to allow the bags to be tucked in closer. The previous owner of my bike had already reversed the axle orientation, so that the nut is on the right side. A very common thing to do to allow removing the wheel without disturbing the exhaust, but I'm unsure how this provides more clearance for the bag installation. Perhaps you could explain.

Slowly making progress.

As far as the reversed axle, I too had heard that reversing in certain circumstances aided in tire changes by not requiring a muffler removal. Upon more careful staring at the bike, looking for ways to tuck the bags in closer inboard, I realized the swing arm is not symmetrical from left to right. Reversing the axle and allowing the longer thread and nut side to exit the left side took advantage of this. The ends of each side of the axle now stick out equally when measured from the fender struts.

It's been the classic story of 3 steps forward, and 2 steps back, but my saddlebag installation is pretty much complete. They're even, level, and everything clears. I had to nix the idea of using the saddlebag rails I had. I would've had to move the bags too far to the rear, so that the bags would extend past the rear fender by a couple of inches. I was back, and forth, on doing this, but in the end, I didn't think it would look right.

Also, I really wanted to use a turn signal bar (albeit a short one) under the tail light. No way I could've done that without spacing the bags out more. Maybe a different style of rail might work, but for now, no rails.
The mounts are spaced out 3/4". The clearance between the mount rail, and the caliper is minimal, but adequate. I was concerned it might sag with a load, so I fabricated a support strap, and attached it to the muffler bracket. It's very solid now.
