Default Fouled Plugs..barely runs..02 Road King

Started to run real bad, now barely runs. Spits..pauses..runs..spits. Both plugs are all black. Battery terminals clean and tight. No codes showing up. The word "diag" never comes up when I first start code check. It starts with codes 1-10 all showing clear, then goes to PPU, then to 82,000 number and back to the 10 codes. All lights work, no check engine light on. Battery is strong.
Just sounds like either fuel or electrics keep shutting on and off.
Someone mentioned maybe the MAP Sensor?
Be nice if it showed a code.
Bike has no add ons.
Your input is certainly appreciated!!!!!!!

I found out that getting codes on my bike can't be done clicking on the speedo reset button. So I used a wire to cross connect terminals 1 and 2 on that access plug and still no codes.

Hey Skiz,

Pardon me if you already are aware of this. Turn on the ignition. Wait for the odo to light up. Turn the off/run switch to run position. The red check engine light will light up and stay lit for about 10 seconds or so. Keep watching the light. count to 10 and see if it comes back on. If you had a bad MAP you should throw a code.

When you say no codes, after you jump the data plug and go through the routine you are watching the check engine light, correct?

A great thread with explicit instructions can be found here

https://www.hdforums.com/forum/touri...dtc-codes.html

Hope you get this figured out.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, after jumping the data plug I watch the check engine light...and it never comes back on. I tried this a handful of times and no codes. Someone mentioned maybe a weak coil, so today I'll attempt to take it off and try a meter check.

Took the coil off. My digital meter is set at 20K The primary resistance is 3. The secondary resistance between both spark plug holes is 6. Does this sound like a weak coil???
Come on guys...someone please help me out there!

The primary side should be in the 3-5 ohm range. The secondary side should be greater than 10K ohms.

Are you getting 12 volts power in?

You mentioned your plugs are fouled. Are they black?

Black and wet would suggest oil fouling.

Black with fluffy or sooty deposits indicate a rich condition.

Any signs of arcing on the plug wires?

Any buddies close by that might loan you a coil for troubleshooting?

Have you done a compression check to rule that out?

Just some things to check. While coils do go bad it is somewhat rare.

Thank you VERY much Garrman for your great info. But today is a happy day. The problem is in the tank. A tab cracked on the black pressure regulator and the O-ring was bulging out. I'm so relieved I can't tell you!!!!!!!!
So thank you gents for all your input!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great news and glad you found the problem.

I recently replaced my fuel filter and tank hoses and didn't get the fuel regulator back in the bracket all the way. The bike would start and idle for about 30 seconds and die. Once I found the issue the bike runs great.

Ride safe.

Yeah....that fuel pump is one stupid contraption. Screwed up design, and one real pain in the rear trying to get it out and finding the exact place to push to unlatch the arm.
One thing I know now....if your bike runs bad and no codes come up.....it's THE FUEL PUMP!!!!!!!!!!!!!
