RIP Gary Rossington
I was a 16 year old budding guitar player at the time. Had an old Harmony electric and a Fender Princeton amp. Couldn't play worth a damn. The hardest part about learning to play was tuning the damn thing. I used to run down the street to a guy who played and have him tune it for me 2 or 3 times a day... until he moved. Probably got tired of me bugging him.
My grandfather, however, was a local established musician who played guitar, bass, and fiddle. I went out and bought that album and took it over to him and said "Hey Pap, teach me how to play this song." He listened to it once, picked up his old Fender Musicmaster an nailed it the first go 'round. Took me another year to figure out WTF he did, but I finally got it.
Great guitar and good songs out of that band in their short career. The one song I cannot stand from the first time I heard it is Free Bird. Go ahead and start bashing, but I cannot stand to hear that song. Don't know why. Love all the rest of their stuff. Particularly like The Ballad of Curtis Lowe.
RIP Mr. Rossington.

I snagged a beer, slid into the area where the band was playing, and jokingly yelled out "play Free Bird!"
(loud enough for All to hear)
Damned if the band didn't just stop playing whatever song they were in the middle of and played Free Bird.
I grabbed the closest single gal and we did dance.
I caught up with one of the band members during their pause for the cause.
He told me that they vowed to do that every time someone blurts out as I did.
Ahhh...Good Times!

Oddly enough, I met the touring manager way back and been to his house numerous times. Never met Gary, but Leon Wilkinson use to hang with the guy. They were really good friends. The dude supplie footage and stuff for the one Skynyrd movie. Might be 'If I leave Here Tomorrow'
Really nice, mellow guy. went down with them in the plane and survived.
1991 FLHS has been a part of my life that bring me satisfaction. I've done my own work on it from day one and will continue to do so until they chuck me in the clay... Shane
