Default clutch issues

recently bought a 77 sportster. i think it's a xlh but it might be a xlch. how can i tell? i'm having trouble with adjusting the clutch engage mechanism. i've read and followed pinion gear's instructions but still can't get it right. i also installed a tamer 2 and new disengage kit from jp cycles. help me please!

Good luck with your clutch, I am having the same problems myself. I am at a loss to ID the problem. The next thing I am check in the primary chain play. I read that if it is too tight it can cause problems.

Please post updates on your results.

Vin info can be found here. Can't always trust the KickStart / starter rule. I think XL's came with both and people added starters to CH's.

I had to drill out a lil bit of the hole where the cable is connected to the lever. That way the cable had more slack when the lever is completely released-engaging the clutch(be careful not to go too far or you wont ever be able to pull the clutch.<---makeshift.
Aslo make sure all you bolts around the case are tight.When I first got my bike it rattled and rolled so much down the highwayonce it vibrated those bolts out to where the clutch wouldnt completely disengage.....heh....
