Default Building up...

Hey hey,

So I have decided that I am just gonna hit the streets with my bike as is. Again I really appreciate everyones input about my Sporty. The only problem is, I need a new front end. My father has recently informed my that the front end on my sporty is off some foreign trail bike. I know my Tripple Tree is broken. I am looking into getting a Harley front end.

I guess I just would like some tips as to where to look online for some parts, and also what I should look at when buying origional parts? I hve said before I am still new into this game, and need some help so I dont get jacked outta cash.

Plus, I have some trouble with the damn thing kickin over. If it sits for more than a week she gets cranky and doesnt wanna kick over. Are there any tips or trick that yall might have to help me get her started up? Another thing. My father has possession of my HD at the moment. So its going to be underneath a tarp until I get back from Iraq. It will be a while before I even get to try and start it up. I recently went to J&P Cycles and purchased the Early XLCH parts and shop manuals. So I should be able to read up on some of the trouble shooting techniques. But any info for a first time motorcycle owner / operater that yall seasoned riders could share, would be appreciated.

Thanks as Usual

A Magneto Sportster is a cantakerous beast. Of course, new points, properly set timing, the right wires, and properly gaped plugs help, but each of these bikes seems a little different.

Your magneto may need maintenance, too.

I don't know what carb you've got on the bike, but that's a consideration as well. I'm running a mag on my '61 with a CV carb, but it's a Joe Hunt not the Fairbanks Morse I think you have on that bike. It starts about as easy as Sporty any I've seen (knock on wood); the Joe Hunt has a very good low rpm spark, but I attribute the easy starting to the carb. I ran a Mikuni and Lake Injector before the CV, and it was a lot more tempermental.

I have a Bendix Carb. Do you know if there is a service manual or anything of the sort for these carbs? I have an in depth knowledge of car / truck engines, and diesel engines, but I know nothing of Motorcylce engines, and limite of Carbs in general.

The Bendix carb specs should be covered in the shop manual. E-bay is a good place to look for a front end. Try to get one that has no rust or pitting on the upper tubes because it will eat seals up in no time. Also get new bearings & races for the neck. They are easy to change. If the wheel on the front is specific to the fork you have on there now, you'll have to dig up a new rim too.

First of all! Thank you for your service to your country. My family and I appreciate your sacrificies!

The place I get most of the parts (usaually has what I need)for my 1977 sportie is V-Twin Catalogue. http://www.zoom4parts.com I have compared prices at other places and found that V-Twin's pricesare usually the lowest.

I don't know anything about the Bendix Carb.I have a Keihin Carb on mine and I'm getting ready to put an Edelbrock Carb on her. Edelbrock has a Carb kit that will bolt up to your original intake. Check it out at http://www.edelbrock.com. Hope this helps!

Thanks again for your service!!

Chuck

For what it's worth, the link below is a good source for NOS factory H-D parts.......I rebuilt my magneto with parts from Bill's.....all parts still inside the original factory plastic bags with H-D P/N's....It ain't cheap, but they all fit perfectly.

BTW, Thanks for serving!
