Scootertramp has the right idea - I'm putting a Dyna S on my '87 Sloptail. The whole thing fits inside the points cover. There is no separate module as it uses the old points-style mechanical advance. The Dyna S has only 2 wires coming from it and hooking up to the coil. It's simple and reliable. (Just don't hook the wires up incorrectly or you'll have a piece of expensive junk!)
FWIW, it doesn't work like a magneto. A mag has a self-contained generator and needs no outside power source, while the Dyna S gets it's power from the battery.
Also, the coils for a points ignition an and electronic might (and usually do) have different primary winding resistances. But not all electronic ignitions use a different coil than a points ignition. Check your own system to determine what you need.
Sportster points ignition coil resistance = 4.7 - 5.7 ohms
Sportster Prestolite electronic ignition coil resistance = 4.7 - 5.7 ohms
Sportster Magnavox electronic ignition coil resistance = 3.0 - 3.5 ohms
Dyna S electronic ignition coil resistance = 4 - 5 ohms for street use; 3 ohms for race

If you have points there will be one wire coming out of the cover and going to the coil. Inside the cover will also be the usual goodies - points & condenser mounted on a backing plate, rotor mounted on the shaft. Behind the backing plate will be the mechanical advance mechanism.
If you have the simplest version of an electronic ignition, the electronics will be inside the cover, probably with 2 wires going to the coil, and some type of rotor mounted on the shaft. The mechanical advance unit will be behind the backing plate as in the points version.
The Dyna S is an electronic ignition, has a trigger rotor mounted to the shaft, and has no external black box (module). Everything mounts inside the ignition cover. It uses the same mechanical advance unit as the points. Two wires leave the ignition cover area and go to the coil.

I'm also in the electronic ignition camp and also have the Dyna S. When I upgrade from points, I went ahead and got the kit with ignition and coil to add piece of mind that all the componants were new and tested for each other.
