two completly different engines,to start with the ironhead has a transmission attached the the motor(cast into the cases) the shovels trans is separate from the motor,about the only thing that is close in the two motors is the shape of the rocker boxes, the ironhead has iron heads and the shovel has alluminum heads, not even close!
There are too many differences to list. They are very different engines. There are two similarities - the rocker covers are similar and the names are constructed in a similar fashion - ending with the word Head.
In the Haynes [a British publication] service manuals they mistakenly refer to IronHeads as ShovelHeads. Some guys mistakenly refer to IronHeads as ShovelHeads because of the shape of the rocker covers.
