I get a puddle of oil after about a 20-30 minute ride out of one of the tappet guides on my 78. With the help of the board here it came down to the guide it self not fitting tightly enough in the case. I am about to pull the motor and fix a leaky rear rocker box gasket so I want to fix this leak at the same time. Can I just buy a couple of guides and see if they fit better? Mabey switch the guides I have on the motor now around to other spots?

Why are you removing the engine from the frame?
The rear rocker box will come off (and go back on) attached to the rear head. There is a possibility on a 1978 the rear rocker box can be removed without taking the rear head off.
Likewise, the tappet guides can be removed with the engine in the frame, although you may have to remove the front cylinder.
Do not mix and match the tappets and tappet guides. Keep those together as they currently are.
If you think you need a new tappet guide then just buy a new one and fit it with a new O ring and install it where the current leaky one is.
As we have said before, the tappet guide is a push fit into the case. The guide is made of mallable iron, so it is easy to distort it.........pg
So as long I move the tappet and guide as a unit I can move them around?
I would not move them around! Right now you have one that leaks and three that do not. Moving them around may end up with all of them leaking. In other words, leave the good ones alone and keep them in the place they now sit............pg
When I got this bike it had a broken bolt in the case that was supoosed to be holding down the guide. It was rigged with some threaded rod and some nuts. So that guide was moving around alot in the case. Is it possible that the hole in the case is now just to big due to the guide not being tight?

That is entirely possible.
About all I can recommend is to buy a new guide with a new O ring and try it for fit. If the new one is loose, then I would start looking for an O ring that is just a bit thicker than the original. That would most likely seal it off. You will have to go to a supplier of O rings to find what is available.
The hold down bolt keeps the guide tight against the case and prevents it from rotating.......providing the guide is a snug fit in the case...............pg
