Default Steel clutch plate slot alignment

I'm inspecting my clutch plates from my 75 Ironhead and noticed on the steel plates there are some deeper slots positioned around in the inner opening. When I took them out the plates where positioned so that the slots do not line up with eachother. Is that the correct way to install or should they all line up? I'm thinking it has to do with the oil entering the plates, I could not find any information about that in the book.
Thanks
Jeremy

On my big twin the plates are staggered, Y I don't know but that is how they do it and I do take them out to soak them in mineral spirits to take out the oil so clutch operates without grabbing.
