Were any of the chunks of metal big enough to have a part number visible on 'em?

I actually found one in the sump of an airplane engine that did, and it was still running just fine when I took it apart!! It was part of one of the magneto impulse couplers that had broken off and it had the complete part number stamped right on it.

True story. I still have it in my tool box.

That's ALWAYS good!

I just threw in that story for the heck of it. I've heard mechanics say that tongue-in-cheek when they find a lot of metal on a magnet or in the sump. Something like "Damn! Some of those chunks are big enough to have part numbers!".

So far, AFAIK, I'm the only one that's actually found one for real. The fact that it was in an airplane engine is just icing on the cake.
