Default Stator Testing Question

Hey guys,

Need your help on the following.

I am having some electrical issues with me 2017 107 Street Glide Special with only 7500-miles in it and I don't have a service manual, and was wondering if anyone around here can help me.

I'm trying to troubleshoot my stator to see the AC output that is has?, I've already tested the continuity to make sure it is not grounded and also tested the ohms and it read at 0.4 which it supposed to be good or acceptable, but in order for me to test for the AC output that bike needs to be running, but when I try cranking the bike with the stator three-lead wire disconnected from the voltage/rectifier regulator, the bike won't start, it only starts with the stator connected to the voltage regulator regulator, so my main question is, how can I test the stator while the bike is running?

The problem I'm having is that while the bike is sitting at idle (+/- 1000-rpms) the voltage meter reads at around between 14-15 volts and when I bump the throttle to 2000-rpms, the voltage gets too close to the red line on the voltage meter. Another side effect that I'm having is that the radio plays music just fine, but once the bike is been running half an hour or so and the motor is up to proper running temperature, the music/sound is starts to cutoff on and off, it goes away for a couple of seconds and then comes back on and it does it continuously not stop, and I was told that that is known to be a side effect of when your voltage regulator is about to go bad on you.

I'M trying to start my troubleshooting starting from the stator and if the stator checks fine, then moving on to the voltage regulator to see if I can pinpoint my problem.

BTW, I did check the battery and the battery is fully charged.

Thanks in advance for your assistance with this problem!!

Roger

Sounds like you are using the dash voltmeter as a reference.

You should be using a digital multimeter, you will probably find that the voltmeter in the dash is not accurate.

Dan, the meter I'm referring to is the voltage gauge on the bike.

I am using a digital multimeter.

The gauge provided by the factory that comes with the bike is NOT accurate.
It would be best to connect a meter to the battery posts directly that way there are no electrical vampires that can alter reading.
From a distance it is reading like the bike might be showing excess voltage as if a regulator wire was loose or the regulator was giving up the ghost.
What does checking the battery mean to you?

We had a 18 STG and it sounds very much like your problem and it was the regulator. At idle all was good, a little off idle. radio would go out, volt meter would either read real high or low, can remember now and some other weird stuff happening. Dealer said they had, had problems with the regulators.

You have high voltage.
The radio is cutting out to protect itself.
