so i have a 2021 Heritage 107 with Vince and Hines slip ons.
other than that it is stock.
i want to change the air filter to a oval on without tuning the ECM.
what will happen if i don't tune it? if ir runs lean what will happen?

and you NEED to tune your engine if you care about it, assuming "change the air filter to a oval" means a hi flow performance one..it really is that simple

So you spent ~ $20,000 to buy the bike then put another ~$700 in slip-ons on it and now want to spend another ~ $500 on an air cleaner but you do not want to finish the job and get it tuned properly? Am I missing something here................

Well...now you done it. Gonna be a dyno vs. butt dyno responses.

Sure. spend $500 for dyno (my local area) + $250 license fee. Make it run a bit better. Do you RELLY need it ???? Do you want to spend the money???

What will it hurt??? NOW, everyone has an opinion. With only those 2 changes, IMHO ( and yes I have done the same thing on my bike in the early stages), It is NOT going to cause any problems.

the ECM has a range, albeit small , that it can compensate for. Imagine being at sea level. Bike runs great. Go up to the Rockies, 10K feet on Million Dollar Highway. You don't think your bike is still gonna run great?

TRY it.

Or...you can use an after market tuner. Oh that's ANOTHER CAN OF TUNA !!!

Even using a tuner on a complete stock engine will make it run better when you auto tune. I have a PV4 on my completely stock 2019 Tri Glide, I have the enhanced stock tune from Dynojet along with a few auto tune sessions. Runs great seems to have better pulling power going up hills and the engine sounds better idling and when cruising.

Just my $00.02

Well no one said you cannot tune it yourself, but doing nothing with the mod's he is doing is really a stupid thing to do. Yes, the ECM has a range it can adjust for but it only does that for the area's when it's running in Closed Loop Control, and when it switches to open loop no adjustments are made. Open loop operation on a Touring bike is typically when you are >35% TPS and/or > 3500 RPM. As for going up in altitude that's handled separately from the closed loop corrections.
