Might get a second opinion. Was told I had macular degeneration. Went to a good opthamologist and told me I had a macular hole and cataract. One week later had cataract removed. Ten days later had macular hole surgery and 1 month later closed up. 1 year since still have some distotiron, as good as it will heal, 20/40 compared to 20/70 before. Will pray for a good outcome for you. This is frequently misdiagnosed. Ken

You need to see a specialist, for sure see a retinologist, not just any eye doctor

Retina specialists are the ones to see for an accurate assessment. But if it’s only dry ARMD they’re not going to treat anything.

If it’s very early ARMD you should just take a multivitamin with Lutein, Zeaxanthin. Or Ocuvite 50+.

If you have medium size drusen, take an AREDS2 vitamin. Don’t take it if you smoke, because that increases your risk of lung cancer. Smoking makes ARMD worse so smoking is a bad idea anyway.

Anyone at risk for ARMD should monitor an Amsler Grid weekly or more. It picks up dry ARMD converting to wet ARMD, which requires immediate treatment.

Don’t just go to a retina specialist. I’ve had patients who only go to the retina specialist and then there was a shortage of retinal specialists, so they sent him back to me, and they hadn’t had a refraction in 8 years. They only did pinhole acuity and attributed all the Visual Acuity loss to the ARMD, even though they could actually be improved significantly with new glasses.

Retinal specialists are usually extremely busy and aren’t going to spend much time on other parts of your eye, like dry eyes or allergies.
