Intensive Care
I know some of you guys think helmet laws are great but it isn't what freedom is all about. If one day they decide to just outlaw bikes period because they're just plain old not safe no matter how you dice or slice it you'll know how it all started. You agreed with having other peoples rights violated.
I know 2 people, who feel their helmets saved their lives. They both were knocked out. One woke up in the ambulance, and the other in the MRI machine.
I had a bicycle helmet save my noggin once. I was on a training ride with my race buddies. We stopped at a light. And because we were riding hard I had clamped down my pedals pretty tight. There was a slight grade to the curb, and I quickly lost balance and couldn’t get my feet out of the clips. I did a soft landing on my shoulder by rolling my arm with my shoulder, but my head slammed the adjacent curb pretty well. It split my helmet, which is what they do with a hard impact, and I got a major headache. But, I didn’t have any physical damage nor a concussion. Without a helmet I would have likely survived, but might have cracked my skull.
It’s not always the speed that cracks your melon. As in my case, as I was stopped, the acceleration of gravity on your heavy noggin can crack it pretty darn well. Have you ever dropped a watermelon from 6 feet? . Don’t be the watermelon.
Nobody on this thread was advocating helmet laws. They are citing examples of when they felt it saved them.

Well wearing it will give the chance to buy some fish.
I think there should be less focus on bikers and more focus on the people that are hitting them, like stiffer penalties. It ain't no joke when you get hit by a car no matter if you're wearing a helmet or not. In reality it's a false sense of security.
I felt the wind in my hair, but it was trying to rip my hair out by its roots.
I've always supported the rider's right to choose to or not to wear a helmet.
I've rode a few times in states where the law was optional but since Michigan repealed the helmet law I have never not worn mine.
A friend of mine used t come to the local watering hole and nearly everyone would encourage him to wear a helmet but he wouldn't.
A few years ago he was involved in an accident when riding in a small group and a few of them went down, one with a busted up leg and my friend suffered lots of road rash and a cracked scull.
He says to this day that had it not been for an off-duty nurse that just happened upon the accident and help his scalp together that he wouldn't be here today, Since that accident he always wears his helmet! And, even stranger later on he was involved in another accident and survived and thankfully he was wearing his helmet for that event but he was hospitalized with some serious injuries but has fully recovered.

Georgia has a helmet law and I'm just as glad of it. Florida, does not require a helmet and when I'm in FL, I will occasionally rider through Main Street, or up and down A1A, but if I'm on the interstate or running highway speeds on a two lane, I'll wear a lid. But I agree; it's up to you. I do!
I was an ABATE member then and rode in support of the protest runs. We had time where we would ride without helmets, or just bandanas, trying to get helmet tickets. Eventually the LEO community was told to stop writing helmet tickets as we were trying to flood the courts, get a conviction, and appeal the conviction. It is in appeals where the challenge of the law can take place. Hundreds of helmet tickets were thrown out and not heard by the courts.
I was active duty and complied with those motorcycle requirements. Today I have an Arai full face helmet for winter/inclement weather. I also have a Shoei RJ Platinum open face full helmet for the rest of my riding.
