The tool, if needed, is not cheap. If yours works properly now it should not be necessary with the new shut off rod.

I bought the tool years ago when I scored original tanks for my Flathead, thinking I would need it for sure. Proceeded to install the shut off from Carl's, went right in the first time, no alignment needed. Seller of the tool said no returns (not his first time) so it sits in the box, unused. That said, if you can get the old ones out, the new one will likely go right back in, good luck.
