I am on the list for the 3rd edition of Palmer book. Would prefer not to spend $250 for 2nd edition and then have to buy 3rd.
Carb parts are due in today, I have cleaned all the remaining parts. Venturi has no light shining around outside so I did not force out of the body. Choke shaft fits snugly in body. Throttle shaft has a very slight amount of play in one direction, can barely feel it but it is there, tight in the other plane. Needles appear to be sound however somewhat stained, can I / should I hit with a greenie and polish up or am I risking damage? Will be using Pacific Mike's video to put the carb back together. He also does a video on setting the needles that I will use.
Petcock - I have left a message with carls cycle supply about a rebuild/refurbished petcock. Waiting on call back. I hope they can help me, I really would like to maintain the original petcock plus I would like to put the one on the 64 back to "original". In the mean time is there some way to clean the petcock filter? I watched a video this morning and he took both tanks off to get the filter out? It appears to me that if I take the tank crossover line loose, should be able to loosen the lower nut from through rod and pull the filter out without removing the tank. Is it that relatively simple? I have tried looking through fill opening and really can't see anything. For now I plan to use it on reserve to see if the bike will run.
There is no filter on bottom of the shut off rod so don't take it off unless you are going to service it. The only filter is on the carb bowl if bike is stock. Carl's rod kits are good, put one on my '65.
The filter on your carb should look similar to this. You unscrew the bottom cap and it comes out with some cork washers.
And if you called Carl's and made an inquiry about a "Petcock" I am not sure he will return your call. Might try again and inquire about a "gas shut off rod" assembly. Not trying to be a smart a$$ or anything like that. he is just really old school so modern terms probably might make him wonder about the inquiry. He has an amazing shop and an even more amazing collection of Knuckles and Pans (from 1936 to 1964.) Best part is that he rides them and doesn' just look at them. His favorite is his 1936 Knuckle. It gets ridden on a very regular basis. Think he has put about 50K on it since he retsored it.

Thanks Kfelt and Panz. Not sure how I worded the message to carls but will call again tomorrow.
My dumbass in a hurry to pull the carb didn't open up the filter housing. Just pulled it and it definitely needs changed. The cork gaskets appear to be shot as well.
Will have to do some more research on the gas shut off rod and how it works to see what the problem might be.
The shut off rod is a simple but complicated system, if that makes any sense. You prob need to take it out anyway to find out why it does not work on main supply so you can study it and see how it works. I personally think it is an ingenious design. So nice to just pull up gently on the **** to access reserve when engine starts to sputter instead of fiddling blindly with an under the tank pet ****.

I like the fuel shut off too but the factory **** needs to be taller or I need smaller fingers like a man bun guy would have.
Ive seen those before and need to get a couple. Nice of them to make a **** from the factory that's hard to use and sell you a part to make it work as it should! They still do that to this day with the new bikes.
Carls called today and provided information to order the gas shutoff components. Will be ordering shortly for both bikes. I saw a video the other night on possible alignment problems and a tool to align the upper and lower holes. It would seem that if the gas shutoff was currently installed the new one would go back in as well. Is misalignment a common problem and if so is the tool available or do I need to find an older timer to borrow?
