Default Primary Cover Paint 2001 FXST

The paint/lacquer is peeling from the front of my bike's primary cover. I bought a small bottle of what seems to be the right paint from a local HD dealer by mail order. Has anyone had any experience in applying this that they could share knowledge please. Preparation tips etc. Thanks.

Powder coat would be best, but if you're going to do it yourself, sand down to the primer if the primer is ok. If not, sand off the primer and use a metal etching primer first that is compatible with what you purchased from HD. That's my two cents.
