Lincoln, NE to Aurora, CO on October 13th. Crazy?

Just did it and then some. Not exactly scenic. And morning temps were near 40 degrees +/-. I would drive unless you're desperate for some riding. If so, be prepared to alter your travel as weather changes. I spent 12.5 hours in the rain and cold. It wasn't all bad, but it sure wasn't the most fun ride I've ever had.
Also Denver actually has worse highways than where I live which is astonishing. I came completely off the seat on a few "jumps" on I-25 by the stadium.

Rode out Thursday and headed back Saturday night. Stayed at Denver Tech not far from you. Visiting my sister who recently found out she has cancer. She lives in the Wash Park area and I also have a lot of family elsewhere around Denver. Niece in Congress Park. Aunt and Uncle have a place on Cheeseman park next to the Botanical Gardens (which we visited). Cousins around Cherry Creek I think.
Had a very nice, but brief visit. Hiked Roxborough Park and just stuck close to Sis. She'll get through it but that kind of thing is always scary. Under different circumstances I actually considered looking you up for a coffee but I figured I better spend what little time I had with family under the circumstances.

The terrain there and west of there funnels the wind through.
