I'm thin king of a trip to explore part of Oregon this summer. The area I'm interested in runs east of I5 at Eugene to the Idaho border and north to the Coiumbia gorge. I'd be grateful for ideas of places to see, eat and stay (motel or camp) if you'd care to offer me some ideas.
Eastern Oregon has some of the finest motorcycle roads out west. Two lane sweepers. Once you get down off of crater lake, just north of Bend, the towns of Maupin, Madras, Fossil, Condon, John Day, Heppner, Blue Mountain Scenic hwy are just some of the dots to connect. On the Idaho end, Rattlesnake, but south of Pendleton, little rattlesnake.
Bend to Burns is desert and not as fun as headed east from those towns north of Redmond. Ive crisscrossed it so many times I not sure one route is better than another. I usually choose by looking at Oregon DOT and seeing which roads are being Chip sealed and then ignore those.
It’s not listed as great motorcycle roads because it is not spectacular, but it is close. Gorgeous, usually warm, with sweepers allowing you to see deer in plenty of time. Small town America, farming communities, decent hard working people make it one of my favorite get aways.
Easy transition to Hells Canyons Rattlesnake and Lolo Pass ride. Too many good options to list. I have so many “shortcuts” that take way longer, but they are good for the soul.
As far as the Columbia, north through Starbucks, (the town), pick up 12 in walla walla, run up to Odessa and head west on 28, turn north on 17 at Soap Lake and run the grand coulee north. Stop above Dry Falls to gander at a huge 15,000 year old flood remnant, then run up 21 to Republic and head east on 20 going over three passes to kettle falls, then just keep going, east, south, southeast, the road is your oyster.
