i've rode most the roads in upper new york and the finger lakes....here is some great routes....
come up thru the finger lake til you hit 20..
off of 20(runs east/westjust south of i90)head north on 10..turn right on 8 and go towards speculator..take 30 north to indian lake..take 28/30 to blue mtn lake ...cont. on 30 north to long lake....go east on 28n towards i87 take the jog just past the hudson towards t. rosevelt mon. that takes you to the i87...jump on the interstate and go 1 exit north...take 73 to keene and follow 73 into lake placid. a good one day trip is to the chasm(by keeeseville) and white face mountain. a decent place to stay in lake placid is the alpine inn and rest. you can park your bike in front of the rooms and they have efficency suites.....as your coming into lake placid you'll come to set of light at the main drag...turn right and the hotel is down a quarter mile on the right.....it's a short walk to all the town restaurants and bars....don't forget it's a short ferry ride to vermont and then new hampshire(no taxes) in new hampshire you have the white and green mountains as well as mount washington..

life is great...we all ride

What jeffbarb said plus theres a cool waterfall and real old mill/power generating building at a place called Wadhams on #22 north of westport.
Westport is right on the river and has a couple of neat shops and patio type bars.

Outside of lake placid is Tail O the Pup restaurant, i can vouch for the pulled pork, baked beans and slaw mmmmmm. Kinda cool little spot too, live music later in the day.

Hope this helps a bit. Have a blast !
cheers
Ian.

I'm new to HDForum. My wife and I plan to make a counter clockwise loop around New York State in late July/early August. We live in Maryland and plan to start with the Lake George area, then down the Canadian side of the St Lawerence River. From Niagra we will head south and back to Maryland. The entire trip will be 1500-2000 miles and we will take seven days. We have traveled alot, two up on my Ultra, but this will be my wifes first trip solo on a Night Train. Good Luck on your trip.

If you do not mind driving a little out of your way the Taconic State Parkway runs pretty much along side of the NY State Thruway. It is very scenic, some twisties and less hectic. Check out this link http://www.nycroads.com/roads/taconic/.

Enjoy Lake George. If you are into history check out Fort Ticonderoga http://www.fort-ticonderoga.org/
