My dad, brother in law and father in law are heading up to NY the last week of June. Those that are local to the area or have ridden the area of the adriondack's..What roads/routes should we hit. Any places to stay we should know about?
Rt 3 and Rt 30 are great roads. The last time I was there the tar was fresh, nothing better than a brand new road in the hills and woodland. Where 3 and 30 intersect there was a Lodge called The 3/30 Lodge, it was a huge log building right near Tupper Lake. If you get up that way head east from Saranac Lake take Rt 86 towards Lake Placid (Former Winter Olympics) head to Keene and pick up Rt 9N (but you'll be headed south. Follow it past Port Henery and old Fort Ticonderoga. Lots of history if that's your bag. Stay on Rt 9N and ride around Lake George (That's where Americade is held the middle of June I think). That area is some of the best riding. In lake George pick up Rt 28 west and it will bring you right back up to Rt 30 again.
Tha cops like to give tickets so watch your speed
have fun
chappy
i've rode most the roads in upper new york and the finger lakes....here is some great routes....
off of 20(runs east/westjust south of i90)head north on 10..turn right on 8 and go towards speculator..take 30 north to indian lake..take 28/30 to blue mtn lake ...cont. on 30 north to long lake....go east on 28n towards i87 take the jog just past the hudson towards t. rosevelt mon. that takes you to the i87...jump on the interstate and go 1 exit north...take 73 to keene and follow 73 into lake placid. a good one day trip is to the chasm(by keeeseville) and white face mountain. a decent place to stay in lake placid is the alpine inn and rest. you can park your bike in front of the rooms and they have efficency suites.....as your coming into lake placid you'll come to set of light at the main drag...turn right and the hotel is down a quarter mile on the right.....it's a short walk to all the town restaurants and bars....don't forget it's a short ferry ride to vermont and then new hampshire(no taxes) in new hampshire you have the white and green mountains as well as mount washington..
I'm planning at least 2trips over to NYS ,one in the park the other later in the summer to the finger lakes. The roads in New York seem be in better shape than here in New Hampshire... One thing ,,the park is larger than the state of Mass. but has few gas stations . Top it off while in town. See you there..
The roads in the Adirondacks are generally ok by late June. They have some severe winter conditions there. The repairs are constant during warmer weather. It's a little here and a little there. It's no different from any other state in the northeast.
I have one small(?) warning for you folks. The end of June is the Height of BLACK FLY SEASON in the ADKs. My experience is limited to the eastern region (Old Forge). Take plenty of bug dope heavy with DEET. Have a great time!
your trip would be wasted if you dont explore around Lake Placid,Keene, Keene valley,
visit. Ski Jumps,White Face Mtn.Ausable Chasam...
Ive been all over NY except for the most south western part of the state,,,
By Far northern Adirondaks is the BEST in New England area.
feel free to get ahold of me anytime, I live about 1 1/2 hr from Placid,(St. Lawrence River Valley)
I'd be glad to give you more detail, or even ride with ya for a day or 2.
you might even be passin by my house on your way up?
Just booked our hotel. We are staying at the Howard Johnson in Lake George on Canada street. We will make that our 'base' and take day trips from there.
