Default Route 66

Rode Route 66 from Springfield, MO to the Grand Canyon and back last summer -- 2,700 miles in nine days.

Let me tell you something... that was the closest this middle-aged husband and father is ever going to get to a real adventure! Trip of a lifetime (so far!).

we are looking forward to our trip down Rt. 66 this Aug, we are starting in Chicago, only live 20 miles from downtown, and going to the end. This will be our longest trip in 8 years, our last was from here to New Orleans to LA to Seatal and back, took 4 weeks. Any info on things to look out for on the trip or interesting things to do would be great..

Gotta hit Route 66 Harley Davidson Dealer in Tulsa if you want a great looking t-shirt.

Two suggestions. Get a Route 66 picture book (coffee table type book) and spend time reading about Route 66 and looking at all the pictures of historic/scenic things along the route. Then, seeing them in person after seeing them in the book, is that much more fun.

Also, get a good Route 66 turn-by-turn guide book. You cannot do Route 66 without one. Most of the states do an okay job of marking the route with "Historic Route 66" signs, but you cannot rely on them. There are not enough of them. Not nearly enough. And since Route 66 was officially decommissioned back in the eighties, the route is no longer signed US-66. About 85 percent of the original road is still there and driveable, but you'll need a guidebook to stay on it.

Personal favorites... Cadillac Ranch at Amarillo (bring spray paint to leave your mark); the Wigwam Motel in Holbrook (?), AZ; the Red River Steak House and the Cactus Inn Motel in McClean, TX; the Mid Point Cafe in Adrian, TX (halfway point between Chicago and LA); spend a night in Williams, AZ and take the train to the Grand Canyon and back; etc., etc. Every day is an adventure... so much to see and do... You'll love it!

I rode from Albuquerque out to Death Valley in May hitting as many historic 66
landmarks and remaining road sections along the way as I could manage.

This is an excellent site to start your research with...

http://www.historic66.com

This is also an excellent site..

http://www.byways.org/explore/byways/2489/

And you have to do the Wig-Wam Motel in Holbrooke about 30 miles east of Winslow..

Love this site, we are planning to do Rte 66 in 2012 so always looking for good info. Hardest bit I think is trying to find an up to date guide book helping trace the original road.
